End of Semester Do’s and Don’ts
It’s that time of the semester when big papers and projects are looming, and students often get paralyzed by not knowing where to start. Or they may have missed more assignments than they realized, and think there is no way to dig themselves out of that hole. These end of semester do’s and don’ts can help your student finish the semester strong and with less stress.
Concerned about missing assignments?
Do: Email the professor to set up a time to meet. At the meeting, ask respectfully whether the professor will accept late assignments, even for partial credit. Ask whether there are any extra credit opportunities. Complete any permitted late or extra credit assignments as soon as possible.
Do: Ask whether it is possible for you to still pass the class without the assignments (if the professor will not accept any late work). If the answer is no, you may want to look into withdrawing from the course - it will be better than failing.
Don’t: Miss any further assignments or class sessions.
Overwhelmed by a big paper or project, and just can’t get started?
Do: Talk to your professor or TA if you are confused about the assignment. Remember, if you are confused, chances are other students are too.
Do: Get started now. Write just one paragraph, or outline just one section. Break down the project or paper into smaller steps for yourself, and only concentrate on one step at a time.
Do: Take advantage of your college’s resources. Writing labs, drop-in tutoring, math centers, and librarians all can be hugely helpful to you.
Don’t: Ignore the assignment and leave it for the last minute. It won’t get any easier, and the longer you wait to get started, the more it will weigh on your mind and cause you stress.
