Daniel was thrilled to be accepted to his dream school - his state’s flagship university with all the rah-rah and unique opportunities available at a school with tens of thousands of undergrads. Very quickly though Daniel felt out of control with his studies. “I really just had no idea what was expected of me as a college student. In high school I went to school, went to sports - I did the work my teachers assigned at night and I did pretty well.
A couple of weeks into college though, I started getting zeros on a bunch of assignments … assignments I didn’t even know I had! Sure I had a lot more time on my hands to do work, but I really didn’t even know how to find my assignments, or how to manage several large projects and papers at the same time. It got so complicated that I got overwhelmed and kind of gave up. And I play club lacrosse … I love it, but it takes up a lot of time.”
Daniel’s parents had heard about a friend’s son who had worked with College Success Plan and told Daniel to take a look at the website and think about whether working with an academic coach might help him get back on track. “Looking back on this year I know that I am in a much better place having had Kelli on my side,” reflected Daniel. “From our first meeting, I felt that she ‘got it.’ She wasn’t telling me not to go out and have fun, or not to play lacrosse, instead, she helped me stay organized and plan so that I could study and have time to enjoy the other parts of college. We set up a block schedule so I could visualize when I had time to get my work done, and I learned a lot of ways to study smarter so that the time I spent studying was more effective.”
“Kelli really kept me accountable and was there whenever I had questions or needed help approaching an assignment or even emailing my professors. I’m pretty proud of how I did this semester and how far I’ve come since high school!”
