Finding Your Footing in College

As a parent, it can be difficult to watch your child struggle in college, whether it be academically, socially, or with their extracurriculars. You want to help, but maybe don’t know how, and your child wants to succeed but doesn’t yet know what it takes to get there. The first couple of years are all about answering those two questions and finding ways to support both your needs and theirs as they adjust to life in college. At College Success Plan, we are committed to helping your child succeed. Our team of college coaches is well-equipped to help you and your child feel confident and empowered. While you might be feeling like college isn’t right for your child, we are here to remind you that there are ways to ask for help that can truly turn your child’s college experience around.

Leave Time for the Adjustment Period

Every student goes through a transition period, especially during their freshman year. This means that grades and motivation may look different than what they did in high school. During this time, their interests in what they want to study might change too. This is all part of the process and natural adjustment that occurs when moving out of a parent's home, and finding what works best for them. Stay in conversation with them, discussing solutions that they feel good about. Having an open mind about what they want to explore, encouraging them to talk with professors or other students about grades or studying, and allowing them to run through the uncomfortable emotions that can arise when being in a new environment will help them better balance both the social and personal pressures that come with college.

Encourage Them to Ask For Help

Some students have a hard time asking for help. Perhaps they received good grades in high school and never needed to seek out extra tutoring. The more independent structure of college gives a student more freedom, but can also make it hard to seek out help. If they have expressed interest in tutoring or mentoring of some type, this is a great point to step in. If they have asked you to trust them in finding their own help, then support them in this decision. The best thing you can do is listen while respecting their space without getting more involved than they feel comfortable with. When your student is ready for a more hands-on approach and support, know that our team is here to help.
